Green Carpet Cleaning Tip

Thanks for checking out our carpet cleaning tips.

The average family spends a lot of time on their carpeted flooring: teenagers lounge around watching movies or playing video games, toddles crawl, play, and nap, and even pets lay on it. Because of this fact many people are concerned with whether the carpets themselves are clean and/or safe enough for their family’s use. Many of these same people, however, never really pay attention to the ingredients in the carpet cleaners.

We believe that if people really knew the dangers of the average carpet cleaning product, they would stop using them immediatelyand replace them with something that is nontoxic and eco-friendly.

Most carpet cleaners contain perchloroethylene, or PERC. This chemical is a confirmed carcinogen and is believed to be a neurotoxin as well. Inhaling the fumes from carpet cleaners containing PERC can cause dizziness, fatigue, and nausea. There’s also the possibility of much more severe kidney and liver damage, as well as additional long-term, serious health hazards.

Other dangerous ingredients are naphthalene, butyl cellosolve, propylene glycol methyl ether, and aliphatic petroleum solvent, the dangers of which range from irritants to carcinogens and neurotoxins. These are especially dangerous for pets and small children who tend to spend more time on or near carpeting. Even the fragrances that make carpet cleaners smell so nice can be irritants.

Why toxic ingredients with such frightening health risks are still included in products meant to make our homes cleaner is beyond us. But we do know that with the growing number of nontoxic green cleaning options available, we will no longer buy into products or companies that don’t prioritize our safety.

There are so many benefits to green carpet cleaning that we’re not quite sure why more people haven’t made the switch. Green carpet cleaning is just as effective, and no more difficult or expensive than using commercial cleaning products. In fact, when you begin to use green cleaners, you and your family will be safer, you’ll decrease your negative impact on the environment, and you’ll save money. What reason is there to not make the switch to green cleaning? We can’t think of one!

In comparison to the ingredients used in commercial cleaners, the items you’ll need to make your own nontoxic cleaners include baking soda, club soda, gentle plant-based soap, and a little bit of white vinegar. These ingredients are safe for kids and pets. They also make your job easier, because you’ll no longer have to breathe in all of those toxic fumes that come along with store-bought carpet cleaning products. Various types of stains and spills can be removed with green cleaners, just as well as, if not better than with commercial cleaners. Even deep cleaning can be done, very effectively, without harsh chemicals.
