A Clean House is a Green House

There is nothing more satisfying than a clean house. When the kids (finally) have their stuff put away and you have the floors shining, you can finally relax. Relax that is, until the whirlwind starts all over again.

But if you use chemical cleaners, we have some news for you. Your home may not be as clean as you think it is. Not only are you leaving a chemical residue on the surfaces you have cleaned, but the air in your home is likely polluted.

The U.S. EPA has stated that indoor air can be anywhere from two to one-hundred times more polluted than the air outside our homes. The pollution in the house is often attributed to VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) that are associated with many commercial cleaning products.

Some of these chemicals have been linked to scary health matters. Skin irritations, asthma, cancer, nervous system issues and tissue damaged are all on the list.

According to a study done in 1999 published in New Scientist, homes where air fresheners and aerosol sprays were used regularly saw a 25% increase in headaches. Mothers were 19% more likely to suffer from depression and kids under the age of 6 months had 30% more ear infections.

Scary stuff.

This is the kind of information that convinced us that we needed to change our cleaning habits. We decided, for the sake of our family (and the environment), that we would commit to green cleaning and take the chemicals out of our lives. We just didn’t want to take the chance with our kids health anymore.

The good new is you can get a clean house without the use of chemicals. If you purchase your cleaning products, look for the Green Seal or Eco Logo on the label. Although there are no industry standards when it comes to green cleaning, these two organizations put cleaning products through stringent testing before they will declare them eco friendly.

You can also get your house looking terrific with the use of natural cleaning agents that you likely have in your home right now. There are a number of green cleaning recipes in our Naked on Recipes section. These are recipes that will clean everything from your patio to your toilet to your oven.

And they work.

Our favorite natural cleaning supplies are made by Enjo. We have a whole section dedicated to Enjo at Cleaning Naked. These eco friendly cleaning products are extremely efficient at removing grease, bacteria, germs, dirt and filth. And yes, without dangerous chemicals. The Enjo cleaning products are simple, can save you cash in the long run and are better for your health and the environment.

Whatever the method you choose to get a clean house, the bottom line is this; get rid of the chemicals. Do it for you. Do it for your family. And do it for the planet.

Happy cleaning.
