Cleaning Cat Urine
Cleaning cat urine is a frustrating affair for any pet owner. Cats typically don’t drink a lot of water during the day so cat urine is usually heavily concentrated. This gives it a strong smell and the potential for creating a lasting stain.
But what is the best way to clean cat urine naturally?
Most commercial cleaners you find at the supermarket contain a variety of toxic chemicals. Chemicals that may get most of the stain out, but will also expose your family to elements linked to cancer, asthma and a variety of skin irritations.
Think of it this way. You already have cat pee on your carpet. Why do you want to add a cocktail of dangerous chemicals?
In fact, some commercial cleaners can actually attract cats to urinate in the same spot. Likely not the type of behavior you are looking to instill in your frisky feline.
Using a natural urine cleaner will do the job just fine. Not only will it remove the stain as effectively as a commercial cleaner, but it will reduce your family (and pet’s) exposure to those nasty toxins.
A three step solution to cleaning cat urine is all you need. The steps use natural household items which make it safer and less expensive than chemical based cleaners.
The first step is to blot the cat urine with cloths or paper towels (made from recycled paper). Do not scrub or rub the stain. By rubbing the stain you will only spread the urine and make your job that much bigger. Get as much urine out of the carpet as you can. You may need to use a handful of towels to maximize the extraction.
Do not use plain water; it too will spread the urine. This will also give you a larger area you need to contend with. Again, the first step is to blot the urine with paper towel.
Secondly, pour white distilled vinegar on the stained area. Give it a few minutes to work and then dab it with a white cloth or paper towel. For an extra kick, warm the vinegar in the microwave before you apply it to the stain.
Blot the vinegar as you did the cat urine. Remember, cat urine is stubborn. You may need to apply vinegar more than once.
Once you can no longer see the cat urine in the carpet you may still need to contend with the odor. The last step is to generously sprinkle baking soda over the area. Let it stand for at least a few hours and then vacuum it up. Baking soda is terrific at removing unwanted smells in your house.
And that’s it. No chemicals. No toxins. No worries.
This natural way for cleaning cat urine will save you money and reduce the health risks to you and your family.
