Tips for Cleaning Dog Urine
Cleaning dog urine is never a welcome task. But we know you love your dog (just like we love ours)! We understand that dogs often become important members of the family. But these family members make messes or have accidents from time to time. This article will help you clean up if that pooch of yours has an accident on your floor or furniture. Here’s how to handle several different situations – and not expose your dog to any harsh chemicals.
Keep your pet healthy by cleaning green!
- If your dog urinates on a wood floor, immediately use rags to soak up as much of the liquid as possible. To clean the area, you’ll need white vinegar, baking soda, and clean white rags. First, dab a small amount of vinegar onto the stain with the cloth, then rinse with warm water, and dry. Next, sprinkle some baking soda onto the same spot. This will absorb any ammonia smell that wasn’t neutralized by the vinegar. If you start to notice that obnoxious odor again in the following days, try repeating the cleaning process a couple more times.
- If your dog urinates on the carpet, mix equal parts white vinegar and water and apply the mixture to the soiled carpet with a clean white cloth. Blot until the cloth is no longer dry, and then replace with a clean cloth. When the carpet is clean, soak up any remaining moisture with a dry cloth. It’s important that your cleaning rags are white or very light colored so that their color doesn’t rub off onto your carpet.
- Cleaning dog urine on upholstered furniture is a bit more work. Soak up as much of the liquid as possible. Sprinkle on some baking soda and let it absorb more liquid, and then vacuum the baking soda off of your furniture. Repeat this process a couple of times. Then make a paste of water and baking soda and apply it to the same spot. Again, let the paste sit for several hours, giving it sufficient time to absorb the ammonia smell. Scrape the paste off and vacuum a final time to remove any residue.
These simple steps will keep your furniture and floors smelling great if your dog has the occasional accident. The ingredients we recommend you use to clean dog urine are as safe for your dog as they are for the human members of your family. This is important because all those warning labels you find on store-bought cleaners are just applicable to your pets as they are to you.
- One green cleaning product we have used with our cock-a-poo is the Ecodiscoveries Pet Cleaner. We used it on a light colored wool rug after our dog “did its business”. The stain and odor came out great after one application. We just sprayed and let it sit for 10 minutes. All we had to do was wipe it with a cloth. It was easy. We make sure we always have a bottle in our house.
- If you don’t want to be bothered making your own natural concoction for cleaning dog urine, give Ecodiscoveries a try.
Veterinarians have admitted that chemicals from cleaning products and other common household goods can pose significant dangers to pets. Our dogs spend more time close to floors than we do, so it stands to reason that any chemicals we use to clean our floors will have the greatest effect on them. When you use green cleaning methods and cleaners that are nontoxic, you can trust that your dogs are safe. You can clean up after them without worrying about harming them or making them sick. We think you’ll feel good about taking this extra step to keep your pup healthy.
