Cleaning with Vinegar
Cleaning with vinegar? It seems so 1920’s.
But did you know that using vinegar in your kitchen will not only get it super-clean, but also reduce your family’s exposure to toxins? We have been conditioned by chemical companies to think the only way to get something clean is to blast it with a mixture of chemical based cleaners.
This could not be further from the truth. Vinegar is cheaper, healthier and is less harmful for the environment. Oh, by the way, it does a great job too.
Exposure to chemical based cleaners can have horrible side effects ranging from skin irritations to asthma and cancer. By moving to natural cleaning products you are reducing the exposure and associated risks with many store-bought cleaners.
Here are a few easy uses for vinegar around your kitchen :
- Clean countertops - By taking a cloth soaked in white distilled vinegar you can get rid of “that stink” by wiping them down. If the vinegar smell is a little strong, don’t worry it will dissipate in no time.
- Deodorize the garbage disposal - Make a dozen or so frozen vinegar ice cubes in an ice tray. Turn on disposal and flush it with cold water. Send down the ice cubes. They will not only deodorize, but clean the disposal as well.
- Clean a drain - Pour one cup of baking soda down the drain. Next, pour down one cup of hot white vinegar. Let the concoction sit for 5 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with hot water.
- Clean your microwave - Mix ½ cup of water with a ½ cup of distilled vinegar in a microwave safe bowl. Turn the microwave on high and let the mixture come to a rolling boil for a minute. This will loosen baked-on foods and does a great job getting rid of nasty smells. Wipe clean.
- Clean an oven door - Pour generously white distilled vinegar on the door and window. Let it sit on the open door for at least 15 minutes. Wipe with an environmentally friendly rag or sponge.
- Vinegar Deodorizer - In a spray bottle mix together 5% vinegar and 95% water. It is great for use on a cutting board. Don’t be afraid to let it sit overnight. It can be easily wiped clean in the morning.
Cleaning with vinegar is a snap and has many health benefits when compared to chemical cleaners. But if you don’t have time to make your own natural cleaning products, there are many effective green cleaners on the market today. Making the switch will benefit you, your family and the environment. Make it green and make it clean!

Happy cleaning!
