Natural Oven Cleaner

Do you know how dangerous a commercial oven cleaner can be? It doesn’t matter if the cleaner comes in an aerosol can, a liquid or a powder; if you purchased it at the supermarket chances are it contains lye. In an oven cleaner, lye often comes in the form of sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. These are nasty, nasty ingredients.

Lye attacks the skin, eyes and even internal organs. In an aerosol can lye is extra dangerous because small droplets often drift through the air and land on skin or eyes (even sensitive lung surfaces). If you see a label on a kitchen cleaning product that states it can burn skin and has fumes that should be avoided, for your health sake you should best stay clear.

The good news is there are homemade cleaning products that can tackle your tough oven mess. They do not contain toxic chemicals. That reduces the health risk to you and your family. Homemade cleaners are often easy to make and a snap to use.

Here is an easy recipe for cleaning an oven.

Ingredients

  • Water
  • 1.5 cups of baking soda
  • Liquid detergent (chemical free – check the label)

Spread water liberally on the bottom of the oven. Cover the dirty spots and grime with baking soda. Make sure the surface is completely white. Next, sprinkle more water on top.

Now the easy part, let it set over night!

The next morning take a good rag and wipe the grease away. You will notice that the grime will have loosened to make the job easy. Once you have the majority of the mess wiped clean, take a squirt of liquid detergent and wash the remaining residue from the oven.

Don’t be afraid to use enough baking soda and water the night before. That is the key to this easy cleaning recipe.

If you don’t have time to make your own natural cleaning products, there are many effective green cleaners on the market. Making the switch to green cleaning products will benefit you, your family and the environment. Make it green and make it clean!
